To Vote or Not to Vote – General Elections 2024

It is time for political meritocracy in Pakistan.

A form of government where individuals are selected for positions of power based on their abilities and virtues rather than their social status or wealth – Plato

With general elections 2024 just around the corner it is important that the general masses are educated not only regarding the importance of vote but also the criteria for selecting a suitable candidate. General Elections 2024 will yet again be one of the most controversial elections in Pakistan as political parties build their legacies on their rivalries and personal vendettas. One party being victimized and cornered is also not new and has been a regular practice of every party that has ever come in power.

General Elections 2024 will however be different as this time the majority of voters will belong to Generation Y and Gen Z. These two generations are considered to be the most affluent, socially aware and tech savvy. Gen Y and Z make up more than 60% of Pakistan’s total population. Much has been talked about the entrepreneurial spirit, wokeness and pragmatic approach of these two generations. General Elections 2024 will be the first time that many of Gen Z votes and it will be second time for many of the millennials.

Political meritocracy is the idea that a political system is designed with the aim of selecting political leaders with above average ability to make morally informed political judgments. That is, political meritocracy has two key components: (1) the political leaders have above average ability and virtue and (2) the selection mechanism is designed to choose such leaders.

Therefore, it is pertinent that these individuals realize the criteria to vote as much as they value the significance of it. We do not want emotional voting as a product of widespread populism which has been done during the time of boomers of Pakistan. What Pakistan needs is rational decision making which can bring grassroot level changes in the political scenarios. If today the youth votes for political aspirants based on their capabilities then next time the political parties will give ticket to individuals with a strong resume thus causing a spiral affect in the political arena of Pakistan.

Criteria to Vote

To ensure that you vote for the most suitable candidate in your constituency and and provincial level make sure that you apply some criteria that rigorously scrutinizes the capable from the uncapable ones without being emotionally blackmailed by the name of any populist leader.

  1. Track Record and Experience:
    • Evaluate the candidate’s track record and experience in public service. Consider their past achievements, positions held, and any contributions they’ve made to society.
  2. Values and Integrity:
    • Assess the candidate’s personal values and integrity. Look for consistency in their beliefs and actions. Transparency, honesty, and ethical behavior are crucial for effective leadership.
  3. Understanding of Issues:
    • A suitable candidate should have a deep understanding of key issues facing the country, including economic, social, environmental, and foreign policy matters. Assess their knowledge and awareness of these issues.
  4. Policy Positions:
    • Examine the candidate’s stance on critical policies. A clear and well-defined platform indicates their commitment to addressing specific challenges and implementing solutions.
  5. Ability to Collaborate:
    • Evaluate the candidate’s ability to work collaboratively. Effective governance often requires cooperation across party lines and with various stakeholders. Look for evidence of past collaborations or bipartisan efforts.
  6. Communication Skills:
    • Effective communication is essential for a political leader. Assess the candidate’s ability to articulate their ideas, connect with the public, and convey complex information in an understandable manner.
  7. Problem-Solving Skills:
    • Look for candidates who demonstrate strong problem-solving skills. Effective leaders should be able to analyze challenges, develop practical solutions, and adapt to changing circumstances.
  8. Commitment to Public Service:
    • Consider the candidate’s commitment to public service rather than personal gain. A genuine dedication to improving the lives of citizens is a key indicator of a candidate’s suitability.
  9. Inclusivity and Diversity:
    • Assess the candidate’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Leaders who prioritize representation and inclusiveness are more likely to address the needs of a diverse population.
  10. Educational Background:
    • While not the sole determining factor, a candidate’s educational background can provide insights into their analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  11. Ability to Adapt and Learn:
    • A suitable candidate should demonstrate the ability to adapt to new situations, learn from mistakes, and evolve in response to changing circumstances.
  12. Commitment to Democracy:
    • Look for candidates who are committed to democratic principles, respect for the rule of law, and protection of civil liberties. A strong democratic foundation is crucial for the betterment of the country.

Given the criteria above it is also essential that in future the political candidates include their resumes in their promotional campaigns such as flyers and brochures. Remember to critically assess information from multiple sources and be cautious of potential biases. Engage in informed discussions with fellow citizens, and actively participate in the democratic process by voting and staying informed about political developments. Change is slow but it is inevitable.
