Feminism in Pakistan is justified/unjustified in the Terms of Aurat March?

The rights of women have been the center of debate in Pakistan since its foundation. It has been perceived that women in Pakistan face a variety of discriminations. The Aurat March is originated in March 2019 and further spread in March 2020 and 2021. The March was originated initially to raise voice against feminism issues but the March led to a war which has been fought with the weapons of slogan between the feminist and non-feminist group.

World Economic Forum (WEF) published the Global Gender Gap Index Report 2020 where it ranked Pakistan as 151 out of 153 countries, as a third-worst country in gender parity.

The objective of the study is โ€œto adopt the discourse analysis on online media debate and raised slogans in March to determine the feminism-based dimensions and emerging trends in contemporary society of Pakistanโ€.

The selected methodology in the underlined study is discourse analysis where the raised slogan of March will be analyzed in terms of socio-cultural practice. First of all, the slogans will be collected and divided into thematically similar groups. Secondly, each group will be assigned a subtitle to identify its existing rational stream. Thirdly, the media analysis will be made to determine the underlying meaning of March-related discussions and slogans.

The analysis is made based on all available information in the media. First of all, all the slogans are mentioned and categorized in feminist and non-feminist groups. Secondly, the intellectual theme of each slogan is analyzed concerning the sloganeer’s point of view. Thirdly, the analysis of media-based discussions provides the detail of concerns of men and women-led debate. The analysis of media discussion over the issue of March provides multiple dimensions to address the issues. The study worked well to analyze the slogans showing women and men hatreds and compared them.

But the study did the best when it revealed some of the important rational dimensions related to this march. For example, TV anchor Ahmad Ali Butt’s perspective of โ€œwomen and mean as a complete teamโ€ and the importance of men’s likelihood to accept women’s rights and make the world a good place for women to live and stop abusing the leaders of Aurat march.

The analysis suggests the finding that majority opinion can uncover the meaning of slogans of male and female groups. It is not enough to analyze the meaning of slogans and their relative values for the sloganeers. But it is also important to understand and support the opinions of relative groups instead of disregarding them.

Men should have the courage to dissect the concerns of modern feminism and regard the intellectual dimensions raised by women. On the other side, the unethical language of the slogans is unacceptable in the social and regional context of Pakistan and stress should be given to change it.
