The list of 15 authors belonged to the reputed institutes of Dhaka, Bangladesh conducted the study to ensure the knowledge about one of the newly build treatments of COVID-19.
COVID-19 is a global pandemic of high priority in the current period. Among all the cases, 81% of cases fall in the mild category, which required management at home or clinical deterioration monitoring. However, if these people will have the drug which can minimize their course of infection, it will be great news for them. The objective of this study is to reveal the research finding related to Ivermectin which is proved as a rapid viral clearance source.
The method of study is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind trial. The trial was conducted on 72 patients in the hospital of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The sample was divided into three groups. One group was given oral ivermectin alone.
The second group was given the combination of oral ivermectin and doxycycline. The third group is a placebo control group. The patients in all groups ranging from 18โ65 years were admitted in the last 7 days in hospitals including the symptom of cough, and/or sore throat, and fever (โฅ37.5 ยฐC). The excluded patients included allergic to doxycycline and ivermectin, had a chronic illness, had already received doxycycline and/or ivermectin in the last 7 days; had a part of any other clinical trial recently, were pregnant or lactating.
The mean values are calculated in statistical analysis. The hospitalization mean duration to virus clearance was calculated which was 9.7 days in the ivermectin arm (p = 0.02), 11.5 days (p = 0.27) in the doxycycline group + ivermectin, and 12.7 days in the ivermectin alone group at 95% confidence interval in all. No serious adverse drug events have been recorded. Viral clearance is earlier in the ivermectin group.
The findings of the study show effectiveness of the 5-day course of ivermectin. It ensures early clearance of virus (p = 0.005). It also indicates that early intervention may also limit the replication of the virus within the host.
The drugs ivermectin are commonly used in drugs in the developing world. The drug is effective and safe to use to treat bacterial and parasitic infections. the drug is also affordable i.e. US$ (0.60 to 1.80) is enough for 5-day ivermectin. So as the trial is been successful in Bangladesh, it would be effective to implement it in neighboring countries like Pakistan.
The unique finding of the study is to get the hope for earlier treatment in the course of infection, limit the pain of illness duration and limit the transmission with the use of ivermectin alone or use it in the combination of doxycycline to treat adult COVID-19 patients.
